Increase Your Weight Loss Success By 37%
Every January, like the rest of the world, we are reminded we may have over indulged a bit this past holiday season. If you are ready to lose weight and keep it off, you need to have the best chance of success as possible!
The best way to ensure your success is to grab a buddy and the studies prove it! “Those who reported higher levels of teammate social influence increased their odds of achieving a clinically significant weight loss by 37 percent.” (1)
It almost sounds too good to be true, but having a partner in weight loss is a proven way to stay the course and be more successful. A buddy will be there to not only help hold you accountable to your goals but push you to succeed.
At Ideal Wellness we have seen hundreds of duos embark on their weight loss journey together and they are almost always more successful than those who go it alone. It’s easier to eat your healthy dinner when your spouse is eating the same healthy dinner, it’s not so easy when they are bringing home pizza or take out. The same is true for co-workers; if the whole office was working on improving their health, donut Friday quickly becomes Fruity Friday. It’s much easier to make healthy choices when healthy choices are available to be made.
When clients do the program with a buddy, not only do they have that added accountability, they have the added support in addition to their coach. If you want to call a friend instead of eating that cookie because you are stressed, it’s helpful to have that buddy in your corner to keep you motivated. Many friends and family will be quick to sabotage your success. They likely don’t mean to, but many people show their love with food, and that usually means carb and sugar laden foods. Having a buddy in your weight loss journey makes it easier to avoid the food pushes because you have one more person in your corner supporting you and keeping your resistance muscle strong.
Of course choosing the right buddy is crucial to that success. You need to find someone as motivated and engaged as you so that when times get tough, they are there to lift you up. What you don’t want is a buddy who will go down the sabotage road with you. It’s not a good path to be on!
Now that you know getting a buddy and a coach is the most successful way to lose weight you need to find the perfect fit!
Things to look for in a good buddy:
Similar goals and motivation levels:
When you are looking for your perfect buddy, look for one who has common goals and a similar motivation level. Even if you and your buddy have a different amount of weight to lose, the two of you working to get there by summer is working toward a similar goal. The same is true with your joint motivation; it’s no fun to feel like the “Debby Downer” when your buddy wants to go off track, go get drinks or go somewhere that has food that will tempt you. You don’t want to have to play the parent role to get them back on track. Sometimes you will each need a boost of motivation, and that’s to be expected. After all, that’s the purpose of a buddy, to lift you when you are down.
Your weakness is their strength:
Another thing to consider when looking for your buddy is your weaknesses. Are you a stress eater, do you tend to lack motivation, do you get bored or resentful of being on the program after a while? You want to have a buddy who is strong in that area. If you know you don’t have good follow through, and your buddy doesn’t either, you may both end up quitting before you have even begun. You need someone to balance you out so if you have trouble with follow through, find a buddy who is solid in that area.
Are they reliable:
Reliability is vital in an Ideal Duo. You don’t want a buddy who says they will meet you at your weekly coaching appointments and a weekly yoga class but then flakes on you all the time. That’s defeating and will make you feel solo in your progress. You want to have someone as committed to these goals as you are. It’s also good if they have somewhat of a similar schedule if you’re going to do any activities together. While you don’t need to attend your weekly coaching appointments together, if your buddy works a lot and has many obligations, they may be hard to get in touch with and leave you feeling less supported than you should.
Who to ask:
We now know that finding a great buddy is crucial in the Ideal Duo Challenge, so don’t be afraid to ask that person who has been supportive of you and interested in Ideal Protein as well. I know it can be a hard subject to bring up, but the gift of health and wellness is the gift that keeps giving, and it’s worth it for your health! Try asking a friend, family member or co-worker who has shown interest in your weight loss if they would be willing to support you in continuing your journey by being your buddy.
Remember, this is not a weight loss contest, it’s a challenge to buddy up and support one another. If your potential buddy is unsure, have them attend one of our Wellness Workshops. They take place the 3rd week of the month where we will review the science of Ideal Protein and give them a chance to ask any questions and try some food. We always offer Free Consultations too which is a great way to meet a coach and get a feel for the program.
How to support your buddy in weight loss:
Once you have found a good fit for a buddy, you will want to learn how to best support them. Ask them what their triggers are and what rewards motivate them. If you both have similar triggers, you will want to sit down together and work through some response cards. If you haven’t been through this exercise, you can learn more HERE. Once you have your response cards ready, set a daily time to check in on one another; this is where having similar schedules will come in handy. You may even want to meet weekly at a local café or coffee shop to see how your weeks went.
Before you both start Ideal Protein, you will want to know each other’s “why” statement. This is the big reason why you want to lose weight. Not just to get healthy but a deeper reason, such as ”I want to get healthy to reduce my risk of getting diabetes and have enough energy to play with my grandkids.” It needs to be personal and meaningful to you.
